World’s First Mammal in Space

Space Dog Laika

Space Dog Laika

On November 3, 1957 Russian scientists sent the first living mammal up to orbit the Earth in an artificial earth satellite (Sputnik 2). They did this to test if humans could survive weightlessness. This first belongs to a dog they called Laika. Unfortunately even though it was widely reported that Laika lived for several days, she apparently died just a few hours after launch. This was probably due to a malfunction in the thermal control system and it took until 2002 for this truth about the time and cause of her death to be made public.

Bluey was born on June 7, 1910 and due to his old age Bluey was put to sleep November 14, 1939 at the very old dog age of 29 years and 5 months.

Most Tennis Balls in Dog’s Mouth

Augie - Tennis Balls

Augie - Tennis Balls

If you’re a dog and there is a tennis ball shouldn’t it go in your month? And if you’re a dog named Augie it makes sense that as many as you can get in should go in at a time. According to Guinness World Records on July 6, 2003, Augie gathered up five (regulation-sized) tennis balls and successfully held them all in his month all at one time. This Golden Retriever belongs to the Miller family from Dallas, Texas, USA.

Longest On Doggie Death Row

Word - Death Row Dog

Word - Death Row Dog

This is not a record anyone would want to compete for. Guinness World Records says that a Lhasa Apso dog set a record when he was incarcerated with a death sentence over his head for a total of 8years and 190days. His name was “Word”. He was initially taken into custody on May 4, 1993, following two biting incidents in Seattle. Where it’s two bites and you’re out (out usually denotes dead). He was held at Seattle Animal Control Shelter; USA (in a 5- by 20-foot cage)  Word and another Llasa Apsos dog named Parshebe both owned by Wilton Rabon, of Seattle were in a long drawn out court case. Five and a half years into the case Parshebe developed a tumour and died in custody. As for “Word” because of his age and because the case centered around a fact that only one of the dogs did the biting Word was (on November 10, 2001) finally released and transported to the Pigs Peace Sanctuary, Washington, USA to live out his life.

Longest Ears on a Dog

Tigger-Longest Ears

Tigger-Longest Ears

You would think that a bloodhound (or a St. Hubert hound) who is bred with the specific purpose of tracking human beings would have a very big nose. Instead Guinness World Records reports that the record for a dog with the longest ears is 34.9cm or 13.75in for the right year and 34.2cm or 13.5in for the left ear and this record was set on September 29, 2004 by a bloodhound named Tigger, who’s owned by Bryan and Christina Flessner of St Joseph, Illinois, USA.

Largest Dog of All Time (By Weight)

Zorba - Largest Weight

Zorba - Largest Weight

Some say a Saint Bernard named Benedictine weighed 343lbs and as such should hold or tie for the title as the heaviest dog, but it should be noted that this weight was provided, not by direct measurement, but by “successive studies”, and the lower weight of 152.5kg (336 lbs) is sometimes cited, which would put Benedictine into second place among all time heaviest dogs.”

Most recognized as the all time heaviest dog is “Aicama Zorba of La-Susa”. His name was almost a big enough name to fit this male English Mastiff who at the age of eight (in November 1989) was recognized by Guinness World Records as the heaviest dog in the world at 343 pounds. At the same time, because Zorba owned by Chris Eraclides of London, England was 8feet 3inches or 251cm long he also claimed the record for the worlds longest dog. His height at that time was 37inches or 94cm at the shoulder.

Apparently Zorba’s record stands as the last official Guinness World Record for heaviest dog. Guinness World Records no longer considers any claims for heaviest or lightest pets. They became increasingly concerned that owners would potentially be encouraged to over or under feed their pets in the quest for recognition. Therefore, to avoid any undue suffering to any animal, they ended their interest in such records.

Largest Dog (By Height)

Gibson - Largest Height

Gibson - Largest Height

On August 31, 2004 a Harlequin Great Dane owned by Sandy Hall of Grass Valley, California, USA was given a Guinness World Record certificate as the tallest dog (living). This giant dog whose name is Gibson won by measuring 107cm or 42.2in tall. Click here to watch a video of Gibson and world’s shortest dog. Gibson works as a service dog.

Update: Gibson was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (aggressive bone cancer) in April of 2009 and in May had his right shoulder and leg amputated. This gentle giant was humanely euthanized August 7, 2009 after it was found that cancer had spread into his lungs. Gibson’s owner Sandy Hall has set up a website www.remembergibson.com to collect donations for dog cancer research because cancer effects one in four dogs every year.

Fastest Dog (Unwinding Car Window)

Striker-Unwinding Window

Striker-Unwinding Window

This is a record that probably doesn’t have too many contenders. Still it’s impressive that a dog named Striker only took 11.34 seconds to unwind a non-electric car window. This Border Collie was trained by a Francis Gadassi of Hungary and set this record for Guinness World Records in Quebéc City, Quebéc, Canada on September 1, 2004.

2007 Suzanna Sorrel set a new Guinness World Record for fastest 100m dog sled carried by eight dogs set at Holkham Beach in Norfork, England. Actually this was eight dogs pulling a two wheel bicycle in a beach.

Fastest Dog Weaving Between Poles

Juice - Pole Weave

Juice - Pole Weave

I have had a hard time tracking down all the facts to this one. What I do know is on December 4, 1999 a Border Collie owned by Lita Jansen (South Africa) and named Jazz. Jazz got a Guinness World Records Certificate in George, South Africa for weaving 60 poles in time of 12.98 seconds. See the video on Guinness World Records site, but note the text beside the video.

It seems that another Border Collie owned by Marcus Topps from Texas, USA broke this record by weaving between 60 poles in 12.3 seconds. This dog names Juice apparently did this on August 14, 2004 in the town of Murphy, Texas, USA. However, as of this time (using only my personal sleuthing skills) I have not found anything that indicates that Juice’s feat was certified by Guinness World Records. This however, does not mean that it was not, but not being certified by Guninness World Records doesn’t negate the fact that she went 60 poles in 12.3 seconds.
